DROP TABLE SQL operator
DROP TABLE SQL statement allows you to remove a table from an SQL database.
Syntax for DROP TABLE statement in SQL
DROP TABLE tab_name;
where:
- tab_name – Name of the table to delete from the database.
Example
You may have found that you have created a table that you no longer need. You can use the DROP TABLE operator to remove the table from your database.
Let’s take a look at an example that shows how to remove a table using the DROP TABLE statement.

This DROP TABLE example removes the supplier table. This will remove the entries associated with the suppliers table as well as the table definition.
After deleting the table, you can recreate the supplier table without receiving an error message that the table already exists.
Let’s take a look at another example where we prefix the name of the table with the database name.

In this case we deleted the contacts table, which is in the test database.
Tip: Sometimes it is easier to delete a table and recreate it rather than use the ALTER TABLE operator to modify the table definition.
