How to find line length in SQL SERVER?
Preamble
You can use the LEN function () to find the length of a string value in SQL Server, for example, LEN (emp_name) will give you the length stored in the emp_name string. Remember that this is different from the actual length you specified when creating the table, for example, emp_name VARCHAR (60). For your example, you have a column called emp_name VARCHAR (60), which means that this column is 60 characters long, it may contain names with a maximum length of 60 characters, but not all names are 60 characters long. In this SQL Server lesson, I will teach you how to use the LEN() function in SQL to find out the actual length or number of characters in VARCHAR or the CHAR field.
Function LEN () with example in SQL SERVER 2014
If you want to know all names that are less than 10 characters, you can use LEN() as the next SQL query:
SELECT emp_name from Employee where LEN(emp_name) < 10
In this example, it will return all employees whose name is less than 10 characters. The LEN() function is very useful, it takes the column name and returns the string length.
Let’s see a couple more examples of the LEN() function in SQL Server 2008 and 2014:
1) write an SQL query to know all employees whose name is more than 10 characters but less than 50 characters.
SELECT name from Employee where LEN(name) > 10 and LEN(name) < 50
You can also apply conditional logic using CASE to make the required one based on different lengths, for example, you can shorten a long name with the addition of “…” at the end of the line.
SELECT CASE WHEN LEN (emp_name) <= 50
THEN emp_name
ELSE LEFT(emp_name, 60) + '...'
END As emp_name
FROM Employee
So do not forget to use the LEN () function in SQL Server, you will know the length of any line stored in the VARCHAR column. It doesn’t have to be VARCHAR, but the LEN() function takes a text value, which means it can be CHAR, VARCHAR, NCHAR, or NVARCHAR.
