SQL operator SELECT LIMIT

28 June 2020

SQL operator SELECT LIMIT

SQL operator SELECT LIMIT is used to extract records from one or more tables in the database and limit the number of records to be returned based on the limit value.

Tip: SELECT LIMIT is not supported in all SQL databases.

For databases such as SQL Server or MSAccess, use the SELECT TOP operator to limit your results. Operator SELECT TOP is the patented equivalent of the operator SELECT LIMIT.

Syntax for SELECT LIMIT in SQL

SELECT expressions
FROM tab
[WHERE conds]
[ORDER BY expression [ ASC | DESC ]]
LIMIT num_rows [ OFFSET offset_value ];

where:

  • expressions – Columns or calculations that you want to get
  • tab – The tables from which you want the records. The FROM sentence must contain at least one table
  • WHERE conds – It’s optional. Conditions to be met for entries to be selected
  • ORDER BY – It’s optional. It is used in the SELECT LIMIT operator so that you can organize the results and select the records that you want to return. ASC is an ascending order, and DESC is a descending order.
  • LIMIT num_rows – It specifies a limited number of lines in the result set to be returned based on number_rows. For example, LIMIT 10 will return the first 10 rows that meet the SELECT criteria. This is where the sort order is important, so make sure you use the ORDER BY clause accordingly.
  • OFFSET offset_value – It’s optional. The first line returned by LIMIT will be defined as offset_value.

Using LIMIT keyword

Let’s see how to use a SELECT statement with the LIMIT option in SQL.
For example:

SELECTcont_id,
       l_name,
   f_name
  FROM conts
WHERE web = 'Google.com'
ORDER BY cont_id DESC
LIMIT 5;
In this SQL example SELECT LIMIT will select the first 5 records from the contacts table, where website is ‘Google.com’. Note that the results are sorted by cont_id in descending order, so this means that the 5 highest cont_id values will be returned by SELECT LIMIT.
If there are other entries in the contact table with the value ‘Google.com’, they will not be returned by SELECT LIMIT in SQL.
If we wanted to select the 5 minimum cont_id values instead of the maximum ones, we could change the sort order as follows.
SELECT cont_id,
       l_name,
   f_name
  FROM conts
WHERE web = 'Google.com'
ORDER BY cont_id ASC
LIMIT 5;

The results will now be sorted by cont_id in ascending order, so the first 5 minimum cont_id entries that have a website – ‘Google.com’ – will be returned with this SELECT LIMIT request. No other records will be returned by this query.

Using OFFSE keyword

The offset keyword allows to shift the first record returned by the LIMIT offer. For example.

LIMIT 3 OFFSET 1

This LIMIT offer will return 3 records in the result set at offset 1. This means that the SELECT operator will skip the first record which will normally be returned and instead return the second, third and fourth record.

Let’s look at how to use the SELECT LIMIT statement with the OFFSET clause in SQL.

For example.

SELECTcont_id,
     l_name,
     f_name
   FROM conts
WHERE web = 'Google.com'
ORDER BY cont_id DESC
LIMIT 5 OFFSET 2;
In this SQL example SELECT LIMIT uses OFFSET equal to 2, which means that the first and second records in the result set will be skipped … and then the next 5 lines will be returned.
