SQL server ports - TCP and UDP Ports

SQL server ports – The subsystems and components that Microsoft continues to complement SQL Server have significantly increased the number of network connections used by the platform. Sometimes it is difficult to determine which firewall ports are open for each SQL Server component. To simplify the task, we have prepared a list of widely used network ports of SQL Server.

From a simple relational database management system SQL Server has evolved into a multi-purpose data platform of the corporate level.

TCP 1433

TCP 1433 is the port selected for SQL Server by default. It is the official socket number of the IANA (Agency for Internet Protocol Names and Unique Parameters) for SQL Server. You can configure SQL Server to listen on a different port, but in most cases port 1433 is used.

UDP 1434

UDP port 1434 is used for named instances of SQL Server. The SQL Server Browser listens on this port to detect incoming connections to the named instance. The service then sends the client the TCP port number for the requested instance name.

TCP 2383

TCP 2383 is the port selected by default for SQL Server Analysis Services.

TCP 2382

TCP port 2382 is used to request connection to the named instance of Analysis Services. As with the relational database and UDP port 1434, SQL Server Browser listens on TCP port 2382, detecting queries for named instances of Analysis Services. The Analysis Services then redirects the request to the appropriate port for the named instance.

TCP 135

TCP port 135 has several applications. It is used by the Transact-SQL debugger and is also used to start, stop, and manage SQL Server Integration Services, although it is only needed when connecting to a remote service instance from SSMS.

TCP 80 and 443

TCP ports 80 and 443 are most commonly used to access the report server. However, they also support URL queries to SQL Server and Analysis Services. TCP 80 is the standard port for HTTP connections that use URLs. TCP 443 serves HTTPS connections via SSL.

Unofficial TCP ports

Microsoft uses the TCP port 4022 for SQL Server Service Broker instances in its electronic SQL Server documentation. Similarly, BOL Database Mirroring instances use TCP port 7022.

This list lists the most required ports. For more details about TCP and UDP ports used by SQL Server, see Microsoft article “Configure the Windows Firewall to Allow SQL Server Access“.

How do I know the SQL Server instance port?

First of all we should say that the default port for SQL Server is 1433. But if you have changed this port or started several instances of SQL Server, that is methods that will help you to answer this question:

Method 1 (xp_readerrorlog)

The following code must be executed on the required instance of the server:

USE MASTER
GO
xp_readerrorlog 0, 1, N'Server is listening on'
GO

As a result, in the column “Text” you can find out the port of this instance

Method 2 (Configuring the Server Configuration):

Go to Start ” Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (or other version) ” Configuration Tools ” SQL Server Configuration Manager” .

Now go to SQL Server Network Configurations ” Protocols ” TCP/IP and right-click on ” Go to IP Addresses tab where you can see the port of this instance.

It’s an easy way to find your extra port.
